A Review of Decision Review Systems (DRS) technology before PSL starts
In the 90’s we witnessed a major breakthrough in sports technology when the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS or DRS) was initiated. Not just that but highly capable cameras placed strategically for viewing the critical moments from both the batsman and bowlers side wowed the viewers. As a matter of fact, all these advances were towards taking the right decision where the Umpires may not be able to judge the insight by a human eye. The camera/television review helped immensely for the Decision Review System.
These specific technologies had been in use in Major Baseball League in USA, since before getting implemented in the Asian region. The Super Bowl and other events already boasted these systems making new rules. If you did not know earlier we would like to share with you that even the Cameramen and Cameras covering Sports/Cricket are highly specialized ones. Trained to expect where, when and how to follow the actions and the ball as it rebounds from the batsman’s hit, these Cameramen and Cameras follow with detailed auto and manual focus to every corner of the stadium and beyond. You cannot just use an ordinary camera or a news Cameraman for Cricket. They need the eye of the ‘Hawk’ to follow the spec of the ball high in the sky.
In 2011, the ‘Hawk-Eye Kit’ was introduced in PCB Matches with UK. The test of the core kit proved a great success and today we are heading for far better and much more advanced core kits to ‘Review’ decisions in the dynamic world of cricket developing new rules– especially Pakistan.
DRS and its many newer introductions in the system may leave no room for error (as to err is human) in decisions that require split-second observations like lbw, run outs etc. Sensors and Artificial Intelligence technology seem to make the specifics as precise as they can get.
Based on the principle of human eye sensory perceptions the newer AI and DRS systems may be able to give cutting-edge addition to sports technology. The main beneficiary in sports in Pakistan will be CRICKET as was Baseball in USA and Ice Hockey in Canada. Looking forward to the evolving world of Cricket in Pakistan, with new rules to be implemented as they come and get tested in the present era of cricket, we will soon know the outcome in the technological arena of sports.
